Get ready for checkout inside TikTok before it reaches you

TikTok is testing one-click checkout from the For You feed and a shopping assistant that answers from your product data. Access runs through your sales rep, Buy Direct needs a UCP connection, and Salesforce's rollout starts in Q1 2027. Ask about eligibility, find your UCP path, fix the product data, and plan order reconciliation now.

TikTok's assistant answers from your product data, so fix the data before it starts answering for you.

On October 5, at Advertising Week New York, TikTok announced two agentic commerce features for brands that advertise on the app.

Buy Direct is in-app checkout. TikTok says shoppers can buy from a brand "directly from the For You feed with just one click," using stored payment methods and saved addresses, with order tracking inside TikTok. The brand stays the merchant of record.

Shopping Assistant is a chat window on the product page, inside TikTok's in-app browser. Per the TikTok for Business post, it gives AI answers "based on information provided by the merchant." The announcement says it handles product details, shipping, sizing, and availability. From there the shopper can continue to the merchant's own checkout, still inside the in-app browser.

The fine print matters more than the launch copy.

Neither feature is broadly live. From the business post: "TikTok's agentic solutions are available through eligibility-based testing opportunities." You get in by asking your TikTok sales partner.

Buy Direct "requires an integration with Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)." TikTok names Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza, and Stripe as partners. Of those four, only Salesforce has published a date we could find: "The phased rollout for these new UCP-powered experiences is expected to begin in Q1 2027."

There are no Buy Direct performance numbers. TikTok says brands "see improved conversion rates" and publishes no figures behind it. Treat that as a pitch until your own test says otherwise.

So nothing here justifies moving budget this week. It does justify a few hours of prep, so a test, if you get one, measures the checkout instead of your catalog's gaps.

Four moves before the test

  1. Ask your TikTok rep about eligibility.
  2. Find your commerce stack's UCP path.
  3. Clean the product data the Shopping Assistant answers from.
  4. Decide how in-app orders reconcile with store orders.

Ask your rep about eligibility

TikTok routes all of this through the sales partner. That is the only door right now.

Send the email this week. Ask whether your account qualifies for the Buy Direct test, the Shopping Assistant test, or both. Ask what the setup requires on your side, what markets are in scope, and what reporting you get back. If the answer is "not yet," ask what would change it. Write the answers down. TikTok's post doesn't list eligibility criteria, so your rep's reply is the closest thing you'll get.

If you run an agency, ask per client account. TikTok hasn't said how eligibility is decided, so don't assume one yes covers the rest of your book.

Find your UCP path

Buy Direct doesn't work without UCP. The business post calls it "a standardized set of rules that enables AI agents and merchant systems to work together." TikTok says these experiences run through integrations with commerce and payment partners, so in practice your platform or payment provider has to speak UCP for you.

Start with the platform that runs your checkout today.

On Salesforce Commerce Cloud, there's a published plan. Salesforce says its native UCP integration will let Commerce Cloud merchants support checkout through Buy Direct ads while remaining merchant of record, and it's adding a central place to send your catalog for Shopping Assistant. The UCP rollout is phased and expected to start in Q1 2027.

Shopify has published one concrete piece. Its developer changelog says storefronts now advertise UCP at /.well-known/ucp, with no changes required. Open your store's domain plus /.well-known/ucp and see what comes back. A profile there means your store speaks UCP. It doesn't mean you're enrolled in Buy Direct, which still runs through your TikTok rep. For Stripe and Shoplazza, all we can say is that TikTok named them as partners.

On a custom or headless stack, assume you'll need to build or buy the connection yourself, and price that work before you commit to a test.

Clean the product data the assistant answers from

This is the move you can finish before anyone approves you.

Shopping Assistant answers from merchant-provided information. TikTok lists product details, shipping, sizing, and availability as topics it covers. If your size chart lives in a PDF, your materials line says "premium fabric," and your shipping page contradicts your checkout, that's what the assistant has to work with. A vague source makes a vague or wrong answer, and it goes out under your brand.

Pull your top sellers and check each one against the questions a shopper actually asks:

  • Sizing: does it fit true to size, and is the chart in text, per product?
  • Materials: what is it made of, in plain words?
  • Shipping: real delivery windows by region, matching what checkout shows.
  • Returns: the actual window and conditions, in one place.
  • Availability: live stock and variants, so the assistant doesn't recommend a sold-out color.

Fix the source, usually your product catalog, and let feeds inherit it. Patching copy in one channel gives you a second version that drifts.

Decide how in-app orders reconcile

Do this before the test, or the test result will be an argument.

You'll have two paths into the same store. Shopping Assistant hands off to your own checkout inside TikTok's browser, so those orders can look like ordinary site orders unless something labels them. Buy Direct orders are placed inside TikTok, and Salesforce says UCP lets your own commerce infrastructure process the transaction. Salesforce also names the failure mode plainly: without unified operations, "teams end up manually reconciling numbers across systems."

Answer these in writing before launch:

  • Where does a Buy Direct order land in your order system, and what label marks it as TikTok in-app?
  • Which order ID ties TikTok's reporting to your own order record?
  • Who handles customer service and returns? Salesforce says merchant of record means you do, so make sure your support team can see these orders.
  • Which number wins when TikTok's count and your order system disagree? Pick your order system.

It's the same habit as any new ad channel: one order ID across both reports, and a weekly reconcile against the store. The ChatGPT Ads measurement note walks through that dedupe discipline in detail.

Two smaller items from the same stage

TikTok also said its TikTok for Business MCP server is now a connector in Claude, Kimi, Manus, Perplexity, Replit, Snowflake, Tencent WorkBuddy, and the IAB Tech Lab Agent Registry. That puts campaign management, reporting, and creative work one chat away. We haven't tested it. Before anyone connects it to a live ad account, decide what the agent can read, what it can change, and what it can spend. Deny by default before you give the agent a browser covers that policy step.

For TikTok Shop sellers, GMV Max will factor in affiliate commissions, coupons, and referral fees so campaigns optimize for what TikTok calls "a true return on investment." When it reaches your account, check which costs it is counting against your own books, or the optimizer will chase a margin you don't have.

This week

Email your TikTok rep about Buy Direct and Shopping Assistant eligibility. Ask your commerce platform where it stands on UCP. Fix sizing, materials, shipping, returns, and stock data on your top sellers. Write down where in-app orders will land and which system counts them.

If your stack has no UCP path yet, or orders from two checkouts need to land in one ledger, that's the integration work we do under Custom Software. Start your build or write hello@mail.22atlas.com.
